It is about 3.5 hours one-way drive from Aswan to Abu Simbel. The temple was discovered by Burckhardt in 1813 and entered by Giovanni Belzoni in 1817. During the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s, an international effort moved the huge cliff-cut temple and the Small Temple to higher ground, making this site one of Egypt's most famous monuments.

The temple was called Hut Ramesses, "The Temple of Ramesses, Beloved of Amun." The massive facade of the main temple is dominated by four seated colossi of Ramesses, among the tallest in Egypt. The Great Temple of Abu Simbel was constructed to face east so that the sun's rays illuminate the facade at sunrise. To the north, a smaller temple was built in honor of Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor.

At the end of your Abu Simbel tour, you will be driven back to your hotel or Nile Cruise in Aswan.

Important Cruise Note: For those staying on a Nile cruise, departure should be at 04:00 am in summer and 05:00 am in winter, then back on the boat by 13:00 (Nile cruises usually sail from Aswan by 13:00).
